Global News: How to Ask for a Raise with Confidence

Asking for a raise can feel nerve-wracking, but with the right approach, you can confidently navigate the conversation.

I joined Global News’ Future of Work series to share practical steps on how to ask for a raise. Here’s how to set yourself up for success.

Step 1: Prepare Your Case

Before approaching your manager, ask yourself:
✔ Have my responsibilities increased?
✔ Am I excelling in my role?
✔ Is my salary below market rate?
✔ Has it been over a year since my last raise?

If you answered yes to any of these, it’s time to gather evidence. Make a list of your contributions, achievements, and any salary benchmarks to back up your request.

Step 2: Submit Your Request in Writing

A salary conversation can feel intimidating. Instead of springing it on your boss, email them in advance with your key points. This gives them time to review and consider your request, making the conversation more productive.

Step 3: Schedule a Meeting

Don’t just pop into their office. Book a time to discuss your request professionally. This ensures your manager can give you their full attention.

Step 4: Be Ready for Any Response

If the answer is “not right now” due to budget constraints, don’t be discouraged. Ask for a follow-up meeting in a few months. This keeps the conversation open and shows your commitment.

Timing matters! If your company has had a great year, the opportunity may be perfect.
